For more than 30 years, Bubbha Thomas has been widely known as a producer of children’s programs, recording artist, concert performer, songwriter, record producer and for his unique style of drumming. This five-time Grammy Nominee has also created a “Jazz & Poetry Series,” “the nation’s #1 in-school children’s program” as well as the nationally and internationally acclaimed “Summer Jazz Workshop.”

During the 1970s while wearing his musician’s hat, Mr. Thomas was quietly developing his media skills as a newspaper columnist for the weekly “Houston Informer.” He also hosted radio jazz shows on two local radio stations in Houston, Texas - KCOH and KYOK AM. In addition, Bubbha began producing a number of half-hour television “Jazz Specials” for NBC – KPRC Channel 2 TV in Houston and also moderated an Arts Program on Cable television.

Soon after working several years as a columnist for the Houston Informer newspaper, Bubbha Thomas then took a position as Editor-In-Chief for the Voice of HOPE, another weekly publication in the city. As editor, he was responsible for numerous editorial writings that required insight, vision, critical thinking and analysis. After a couple of years in this unique position, Bubbha became the publication’s Sports & Entertainment Editor. While serving in that position, he displayed the same level of energy that made him a high school “All-State” basketball player.

During Bubbha’s tenure as a reporter/columnist, he covered some of the biggest sports events, stories and notable people in America. As a graduate of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, he had first hand knowledge of the once rich tradition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their sports programs. During the last 40 years, the long-standing heritage and greatness of these institutions has systematically become a thing of the past. What is even more profound is the inability of HBCU’s to attract top black athletes, which asks the question: “Why has that happened?” To find an answer, Bubbha wanted to take his conversation about this very important subject off the street corner and into mainstream America, while looking at the reasons why HBCU’s are no longer attracting top black athletic talent to their campuses.

Ten years ago, Mr. Thomas began to do research on what the underlying causes of why there has been a marked decline in blue-chip recruitment at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, while the corresponding power of the black athlete has soared immensely. The reasons for these irregularities are found in the book - “NCAA — National Collegiate Affirmative Action” by Bubbha Thomas, one the most controversial and thought-provoking books ever published.
